D-Day for the NLD

The National League for Democracy (NLD) on Monday faces a critical choice. It is due to make a historic decision on whether it will register as a political party and contest the Burmese election or refuse to register and face dissolution. More than 160 of the party's leaders have assembled to discuss the issue at a meeting of the party's central committee at the NLD headquarters in Rangoon.

The Irrawaddy has surveyed the opinions of about 50 NLD officials at the township level. NLD representatives from all 25 townships in Magwe Division said they oppose the registration of the party, as did the leadership of Pegu Division. In Mandalay Division, only Aungmyaythasan Township said it wants the NLD to register in order to maintain the existence of the party. Moegoke, known for its rubies, said it is still undecided.
