Another Rangoon-based political party, the National Political Alliance (NPA), applied for party registration on Thursday to contest in the upcoming election, according to party sources.
So far, six political parties have applied to the election commission to form a political party since the Burmese regime announced the party registration law.
The main opposition party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), announced on Monday that it would not register to contest in the election.
Ohn Lwin, an NPA leader, told The Irrawaddy on Friday the party is working on the party platform, policy, constitution and a list of party members. The party has 15 committee members and more than 100,000 members, according to Ohn Lwin.
“Basically, the policy of the party is the national interests,” he said. “We will support whoever serves our national interests. And will oppose whoever is against the national interest,” said Ohn Lwin.
The party will contest in constituencies nationally, he said, and it expects to win around 20 parliamentary seats.
Party leaders such as Ohn Lwin, Kyi Win, Thein Kyi and Tin Win will contest in locations such as Taungdwingyi in Magwe Division, Kyaiklat in Irrawaddy Division and Mingalardon Township and Mingalar Taung Nyunt Township in Rangoon Division.
Ohn Lwin said he wants the election to be all-inclusive, and the NPA wants the NLD to register as a political party.
Commenting on the NLD decision not to register, he said, “We need to accept the reality in Burma. They need to think about it. If they think about it, their attention may turn to the election.”
The NPA party flag has a blue background with a circle in center with a star positioned in the center of the circle.
The six parties that have applied for registration are the Kayin People's Party (KPP), the National Unity Party (NUP), the Democratic Party (DP), the Union of Myanmar National Political Force (UMNPF), the 88 Generation Students Union of Myanmar (GSUM) and the National Political Alliance (NPA).
The KPP is led by well-known Rangoon physician Dr. Simon Tha; the NUP is led by Tun Yi, former deputy commander in chief of Burma's armed force; the DP is led by veteran Burmese politician Thu Wai; and the NPA is led by Ohn Lwin, a Rangoon-based politician who was a candidate in 1990 election.
The UMNPF is led by Aye Lwin, a former university student leader who took part in the 1988 uprising, and the GSUM is led by Ye Htun, the brother of Aye Lwin.
