Burmese authorities have banned all Rangoon journals from being distributed by air to isolated regions of the country after anti-regime leaflets were found inside some journals, a source at the Ministry of Transport said on Monday.

The anti-election leaflets, which asked people not to vote, were found on planes bound to Kengtung, Tachileik, Myeik and Tavoy.

The authorities will probably prevent the distribution of all journals by plane until after the Nov. 7 general election, said the source.

There are about 150 local journals published in Burma and most are delivered to isolated regions by air, because there may not be access by roads to some areas.

A Rangoon official who asked for anonymity said that the regime wants to prevent any negative information from reaching the public before the Nov. 7 general election.
